I Remember Timothy Killian

I have known Timothy for about a dozen years through the Scouting programs. He was actually in Cub Scouts when I first met him and he came to Troop 642 meetings and activities with his older brother Paul. Timothy was always friendly, out going and full of energy. When he crossed over into Boy Scouts he joined Troop 642. I have many stories to share about Timothy and his Scouting experiences. He was always active and took on many leadership rolls in the Troop, Order of the Arrow as well as many District events such as Camp-O-Ree and Cub Day Camp. He was involved and always there when you needed him. My favorite story about Timothy has to do with his Eagle service project and earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Timothy waited until the last possible minute to complete his Eagle project. Part of the delay came from a couple false starts in finding a project and part of the delay came from his very active schedule. Many leaders in the Troop thought that he would never complete a project because the process was delayed and there wasn’t enough time to complete all the steps. As his Eagle Advisor, I saw a serious side of Timothy and helped him find a new project at the VA Hospital in Long Beach that involved building a pathway to and a foundation for a new Tongva Indian stone monument that was to be installed at a later date. The monument itself was being made to recognize and protect an ancient Tongva Indian burial grounds. I saw Timothy’s eyes light up, his focus change and his momentum shift. The rest was history. He sat down at my kitchen table one afternoon and wrote the project proposal on his laptop computer, set the schedule, planned for donations, and filled out the remainder of the paper work. In less than a weeks time he had completed the planning for his project that normally would have taken about six months. He was focused and efficient in completing the project and turned in his final report with several days to spare before his 18th birthday. I was extremely proud of Timothy when he earned his Eagle Rank on March 31, 2009. I will miss Timothy’s outgoing personality, his positive can do attitude, his friendliness, and his dedication to serve others. Yours in Scouting, Dave Paulsen Eagle Advisor
