Tim Killian - Brother in Scouting; Brother in Christ

I first met Tim Killian in September 2004 at the Order of the Arrow Pow Wow at Lost Valley when we ended up sharing a tent. The next year, we had become good friends and joined the Ceremonies team together with David Ross and Mark Orland. Tim was not the most experienced actor or the quickest learner, but he put everything he had into learning his lines and improving his performance. Over the years, Mark, Tim, and I became like brothers. We did everything together. In 2006, we went as a group to NOAC at Michigan State University and shared a dorm room. It was hot and sticky and we were all sweaty and smelled bad, but nothing could dampen Tim’s cheerful spirit. In 2007, when I was called to the Vigil Honor, I was disappointed that neither Mark nor Tim was called with me. I later realized that God had planned it perfectly. I was able to sponsor Mark the following year, and the next year, when Tim joined us, we were able to walk him through it together. That moment, when I got to announce Timothy Killian as a member of the Vigil Honor, and give his Vigil name, Wewoatamowi-Wiechenin, which translates as Prudent One Who Prepares Food, and see Mark place the Vigil Sash on him, was one of, if not the, best moments of my Scouting career. In all the years I knew Tim Killian, I cannot think of a single time that I saw him without a smile and a hug that would thaw even the iciest of hearts. Timothy Killian truly lived out the Scout Oath and Law in his everyday life. He was always cheerful, always friendly and kind, completely loyal, and, most importantly, I know that Timothy was reverent and did his duty to God. He obeyed the greatest commandments, to love God and to love his neighbor. My prayer is that we would take that example and apply it to our own lives. “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” –Hebrews 10: 19-25 Let us not neglect to meet together, but let us encourage one another and stir one another up to love and good works. Timothy Killian did this. I pray that God would help all of us to do it half as well as he did.
